Art students from Meadowdale High School last week helped Edmonds artist Sue Coccia paint a mural downtown.
“Heron” depicts animals that call the Edmonds Marsh home and is on a wall behind HouseWares at 318 Main St.
The Edmonds Mural Society each year puts out an invitation to local high school teachers to recommend potential student volunteers for mural work.
This was Sami Sully's second year participating. Sully, 17, who will be a senior at MHS this fall, said the volunteer work is a great experience.
“Not only is it helping the community, but it also helps me expand as an artist,” she said. “Last year for example I learned a lot of techniques that would have taken me a lot longer if I had done it on my own.”
Working with Coccia's style this year also helped inform Sully's own style, which is more “cartoony animals.”
Like other student volunteers, Sully hopes to continue her interest in art. “It's basically what I want to do with my life,” she said.
“Heron” is the first of five new murals planned for downtown this summer by the Edmonds Mural Society. Painting of the second mural, by Andy Eccleshall, is expected to start later this week at The Papery, 410 Main St.
Free Babypants children's concert in Shoreline

Register early at EdCC to avoid full, canceled classes
Edmonds Community College encourages prospective students to apply early for fall courses as it expects high demand at the same time it must cut classes to save money.
The college will address part of a state budget reduction by decreasing the number of sections of classes that are low enrolled. Classes will run full this fall. To avoid finding classes full or canceled due to low enrollment, students should register early to indicate their interest, officials say.
New programs this fall include associate's degrees in music and baking. Already axed due to low enrollment are drama courses.
Students can register throughout the summer and pay tuition later. The tuition deadline for fall is Sept. 8. Fall classes run Sept. 20 through Dec. 9. For more information on courses or campus life, including on-campus housing, call 425-640-1459, email info@edcc.edu or visit www.edcc.edu.
Referrals for free clothes available in August
Clothes for Kids celebrates its 27th year of providing free clothing and shoes for low-income students this year. The Lynnwood-based nonprofit helped more than 6,000 individuals during the 2010-11 school year, providing 3,621 wardrobes to preschool-through-12th grade students and serving nearly 950 families.
Starting the third week of August, students and their families will be able to secure a referral from their school and come “shop” at Clothes For Kids. This year sees the nonprofit's largest inventory of new and gently used clothing to start back-to-school shopping, thanks to many donors and grants.
Children who attend school in the Edmonds, Everett and Mukilteo districts and who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch are eligible. Parents must request the group's “Requisition for Clothing” form from the school office. The form includes information on open hours and directions. No appointment is necessary, but families must bring the form with them when they come to get clothes.
Families whose children attend school in a different school district within Snohomish County must visit the shop to qualify; bring the award letter from the school stating that the family qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.
Clothes For Kids is open 9 a.m.-noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays or Thursdays, from late August through the end of May.
For more information, call 425-741-6500.
District calendar is online
The Edmonds School Board approved a final calendar for the 2011-12 school year, which starts Sept. 7. See it at www.edmonds.wednet.edu.
