E-W senior earns Legion scholarship

Katarina Nguyen, a senior at Edmonds-Woodway High School, took second place in the 75th annual statewide Constitutional Speech Contest, Feb. 4 in Pasco.

The competition, sponsored in each state by the American Legion, is open to any public, private, or home-schooled student in ninth through 12th grades. A dozen students from Washington met the challenges to be certified locally.

In addition to receiving the $1,500 scholarship, Nguyen was also awarded a silver medal and a certificate by American Legion officials Jake Cabaug, Washington state department commander, and by Mervin Gunderson, western region national vice commander.

Nguyen is the daughter of Anthony and Tina Nguyen, of Lynnwood. Her parents and grandmother, Hiep Chung, were in the audience to support her at the contest.

She plans to deliver her oration again in a combined meeting with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. She is also scheduled to speak at the annual Edmonds Memorial Day Ceremony.

Courtroom battles head to Olympia

Several local teens will head to Olympia on March 23-25 for the state YMCA Youth & Government Mock Trial tournament.

Archbishop Murphy High School in Mill Creek and King’s Schools in Shoreline finished in the top two at a district competition Feb. 8-11 at the Snohomish County Juvenile Justice Center.

The Archbishop team took top honors for the fifth consecutive year. The team includes Claudia Morales, of Lynnwood, and Dan Harris, of Edmonds. Other team members are Annie Dang, Marcella Carey, Kristo Hausmann, Mitch Longoria, Jessica Lucas, Trong Duong, Monica Erickson, Trevor Mozingo, Clare Lunceford, Emma White, Luke Bolles and Beth Mies.

The King’s Schools team includes Greyson Nelson, of Lynnwood; McKenzie Mitchell and Mason Hudon, both of Edmonds; and Sonja Leite and Gabrielle Morris, of Woodway. Other team members are Madison Dugas, Madeline Arnold, Trinity Hepper, Faith Gleason, Jordyn Wescott, Billy Loughrin, Anna Obert and Sarah Elwood.

Mock Trial has students participate in a competitive courtroom showdown by taking on such roles as witness and attorney. Teens research case law and argue legal issues in front of real judges and lawyers.

Gala benefits EdCC

The Edmonds Community College Foundation will hold “A Vintage Evening” gala dinner and auction Feb. 25 at EdCC, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood.

Featured are guest chef Ethan Stowell and the chance to bid on special dinners, student-crafted jewelry, trips and high-end wines, along with a raffle for a cruise.

Professor named to historian board

Shoreline Community College history Professor Amy Kinsel received word Feb. 6 that she was elected to the executive board of the Organization of American Historians.

“This is a tremendous honor,” Kinsel said in a statement.

Kinsel’s position represents community college history faculty on the nine-member board of the professional group. Kinsel has been active in the Organization of American Historians for many years, presenting papers at a number of meetings and serving on committees and boards. She will serve on the executive board through 2015.

“I am excited to accept this position,” Kinsel said, “and I look forward to representing community college historians at the national level.”

Students of Color scholarship deadline

More than 1,000 Snohomish County middle- and high-school students are expected to attend the 10th annual Students of Color Career Conference March 29 at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St., Everett.

Local professionals in more than 20 fields will be on hand. Students can select up to three career panels, attend the career and education fair, and get information about college admission and financial aid.

All students are welcome to attend, but preregistration is required via school counselors. To register, students should contact their counselors.

High school seniors attending the conference can apply until March 2 for $500 and $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded at the event. Scholarship winners must be present to win, and each can use the scholarship at the accredited school of their choice.

Women’s History Month at EdCC

Edmonds Community College wraps up its celebration of Women’s History Month with events held on its campus at 20000 68th Ave. W in Lynnwood.

• 12:30 p.m. Feb. 22, “A Female Immigrant’s Journey to Success.” International author Angie Chau discusses life in Vietnam, immigration to the United States and her road to success as an author. Chau will sign copies of her book “Quiet as They Come.”

• 12:30 p.m. Feb. 23, “Women of the Middle East.” Arabic instructor Christina Fusch moderates this panel discussion. A live presentation on the history of belly dance with demonstrations follows. Refreshments and henna tattoos available prior to the discussion with proceeds to benefit the student Arab Club.

• 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23, “Female Entrepreneurs’ Business Network and Resource Fair.” Representatives include the Service Core of Retired Executives, Small Business Administration, Sno-Isle Library, city of Lynnwood and the Northwest Washington Business Center.

• 4:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the art gallery on the third floor of Lynnwood Hall, “Heart and Grace Reception.” Meet artist Kristen Ramirez at the last day of her exhibit “Lore.” Ramirez based her installation on students’ oral histories and creates a mixed media piece drawing on sign painting and typography for inspiration. Refreshments will be served.

North City preschool holds open house

An open house will be held from 10 a.m.-noon March 3 at North City Education Center. Three co-op preschools will be open for tours: North City Co-op, Shoreline Co-op and Shorenorth Co-op. Each are affiliated with Shoreline Community College.

Visitors can get information about parent education credit, play-based education, and how children benefit by being enrolled in a co-op. The center is located at 816 NE 190th St., Shoreline.
