The first Humboldt penguin chicks of the season have hatched at the Woodland Park Zoo. The first egg hatched on April 3. When the parents rejected the second egg, it was moved to foster parents and hatched a few days later. Four more eggs are expected to hatch between April 16 and 26, according to the zoo. The chicks are not yet on exhibit. They are expected to join the adult penguins in the outdoor public exhibit sometime with summer.

Bill, a Leonberger dog owned by the Taft family of the Arlington area, competed Thursday in the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York City.

Bill, a champion in his breed, also works as a certified therapy dog in the county.

The 136th Westminster Kennel Club dog show began on Monday in New York. More than 2,000 dogs, representing 185 breeds, compete for glory. The contest culminates tonight with the selection of Best in Show. The show starts at 8 p.m. Western time on USA. Be warned, the coverage is on a time delay, so if you don't want spoilers, avoid the Westminster site after 5 p.m.

Sarvey Wildlife Center recently took in a cottontail rabbit that was attacked by a rat. The rabbit was successfully released back to the wild. The Sarvey staff took this video of the rabbit, after an initial reluctance to leave a cozy kennel, heading back to the woods.
